The Chicago Tribune recently published an explosive story on the chronic truancy problem plaguing not only Chicago public schools, but public schools across the state.
According to the Tribune article, chronic truancy increased by 60% in the past 10 years, despite the $175 million spent on the problem.
The Number Crunchers decided to review Valley View school district's truancy rate. We pulled the 2011 Illinois School Report Card and discovered the following:

It's no wonder the students are scoring well on standardized tests.
ReplyDeleteSo much for everyone putting the blame on teachers! How can we expect them to teach kids that don't bother showing up for class?
ONE WORD......
ReplyDeletePARENTS!!!!!!
My son has said that A LOT of the kids at BHS don't LIVE in Bolingbrook, they STAY in Bolingbrook. We need to crack down on the kids that come from other cities to VVSD schools.
ReplyDeleteThe proof of residency is a joke! All that you need is a piece of junk mail, magazine subscription... What happened to providing a mortgage statement, property tax bill, lease...? I'm tired of paying high taxes to a school district that lets every Joe Schmoe in.
Getting rid of the ones that STAY here would probably get rid of a lot of the discipline problems as well!
But yet the teachers are the one that get blamed for the students not making AYP.
ReplyDeletePut the blame where it should be. On the students and the parents!
How about the breakdown of the demographics of the truancies?
ReplyDeleteBet they closely match the ISAT scores, or should I say lack of "meets" on the test.

RHS 13.2% x 2000 students = 264
BHS 13.5% x 3700 students = 499
VVSD 4.6% x 17500 students = 805
I may have missed it in the article, but the 13.5% rate, is that daily or weekly? Meaning that at RHS 264 kids miss school a day or a week?
