In a district with over 100,000 residents and a student enrollment of over 17,000 I don't think that a poll of 41 people would be considered an accurate assessment of the issue.
Wow, Anonymous 12:46pm, you're brilliant. Do you have any thoughts on where in the budget the district can cut to close the deficit? Which is what the article is addressing.
I believe the district should contract the bussing to a 3rd party, eliminate the administrators, and reduce the capital outlays.
Legal, You might be surprised to hear that I also support the outsourcing of the transportation department. You won't be able to get rid of all of the administrators in that department because they district needs to have someone for parents to call when there's a problem or when particular transportation issue arise with IEP situations.
The title of the article is what was being addressed. "Local Poll Show Most In the Community Are Against 3rd Party Busing " How are "most" "in the community" against the idea when only a fraction of 1% of the community participated in the poll?
If you read the subtitle, it says "IF the polls are accurate.." The article has less to do with the poll and more to do with how money is spent in the transportation department.
It seems you are looking for a way to criticize the article, when there's really nothing there to criticize.
Busted. I am calling you out on it.
By the way, I disagree with you re. eliminating administrator positions. Anyone can answer the phones, much cheaper at that.
Legal, Since you're the expert, why in the world would you use a title that says "most in the community" when the article doesn't support that statement? For that matter, why even bring the poll into the discussion at all?
You say that anyone can answer the phone. While that may be true, is that same person that is answering the phone also going to be a district representative at IEP meetings? Is that person going to be the one that rectifies situations when they arise? Will parents deal directly with the bus company with any concerns or problems that they have? I'm not saying keep them all, but parents will want someone at a district level to speak to when problems arise. Believe me, there are plenty of problems and concerns with the buses being in-house. It's not likely that those will go away if we outsource.
Really??? Are you implying that I'm Rhonda Reed-Slaughter posing as Legal Eagle on the blog? Not only do you sound bitter, you're also paranoid. Get a grip.
This article is very informative, Rhonda's an excellent writer, and The Number Crunchers website is outstanding.
So stop the hating. You're grasping, clinging, stalking. Cut it out.
Legal, You're reading too much into the comment. The "you" was generic. I should have worded it "why in the world would the author use a title that says "most in the community" when the article doesn't support that statement? Is that better?
Now, would you care to answer the question? Why even mention the poll in the article at all?
Would you care to address the other comments about the need for someone at a district level?
You have made some great points. There were not enough responses in that poll to crunch the numbers.
If I were a parent of a child going to school in the district, I would want to be able to talk to someone besides a person that's hired to answer the phone. Call me crazy but I just don't think that they would have the power to address my concerns or fix the situation that prompted my call.
In an article a week or so ago, someone suggested only providing buses to the public schools. I had no idea that we were busing kids to other schools. I really wonder why the administrators and school board are not addressing this. Even if it saves $100,000 that would be better than nothing.
Having highly paid administrators on staff will not make a difference if there's a 3rd party busing the children. Remember what happened to Bill & Kelly Davidek's daughter? Valley View could not tell them where their daughter was. She was told to call the 3rd pty bus company.
Why not contract out the administrator duties? We don't need them. Period.
Valley View driver drove over a neighbor at Boughton and Feather Sound Drive. The driver did not render any assistance and the neighbor died from being driven over. The on line poll is not meaningful. The union and their friends are campaigning to retain control. The School Board should change to the outside bus service to save money. The qualified drivers will be hired by the new company. I trust the private company to provide safe and efficient service.
I disagree. The online poll is relevant. It shows an embarassing lack of interest. If very few people in Bolingbrook even bother to vote, how many will care enough to take a poll? It's a shame. Even still, the 3rd party busing will not be enought to close the growing deficit.
The savings amounts to about $855,000 (almost a $million)per year. Not chump change. Every bit helps..and I'm tired of our elected officials in local government showing little concern for spending our tax dollars. I guess they don't care because it's "other peoples'" money. As for lack of interest..that is true in some respects..and demonstrated by the very few residents attending local government board meetings. It's a shame..but many residents are having trouble fitting in meetings when they are working multiple jobs.
To all you anonymouses: Why don't you all be more creative.....go just that little bit more and make a fake name for you fake selfs. It get's confusing following the the B.S. from everyone calling themselves the same.
Being hired/being a driver is not that great of a job. So what's the problem w/ it being union employed? Maybe you all don't know that the outside companies pay $ 10.00 an hour, and it just gets you by these trying times for 4 hours a day. The 4 hours means work for 2 go home/ or back to the barn and sit for 5 hours and go back for 2. The brown noses get the intermural or sports apointments.
The situation is that everything we pay for as tax payers can be out sourced. From building inspectors to what ever you want. Imagine security companies replacing our police force. Administrators running our village w/ meetings twice a month for a fee rather than a dictator type that gets 2 pensions. If you all want to blame unions on this bussing issue and any other issues as well, then spit it out. Let's all work for those employment agencies that Claar's fortune 500 companies feed off along warehouse row to stay in existance for a blazing 9- 10 an hour. To get medical benifits w/ these temp agencies you have to work one year.....but then they lay you off before that time comes up. Gee, I'm wondering...will these new outsourced bus drivers se hobla english?
I don't see one comment from anyone bashing unions or the drivers.
You mention that brown noses get the get routes. If that's true, that's an issue that you need to take up with your union. The drivers that I spoke with said that jobs are bid on by seniority. If you're too far down the line, you get stuck with the short routes or the ones that others don't like (like standing outside in the rain and snow loading wheelchairs).
Hey Sally saucer...lay off the sauce. The comment from one of the dam anymouses stated that the Unions and their friends are trying to gain control. Regarding the Bus accident. Well da, that person is complaining about the unions! I am not.I'm also not a bus driver, but thanks to President Bush I almost had to in 2009.The kiss asses got the field trips during the day and did better than 4 hours pay!People take these jobs because they have to.What are you talking about brown noses get the get routes? Perhaps you are one of those drivers that booze it up during the miday soaps, then go get the kiddies. I prefer the district keeps the bus drivers and not source them out. I don't want to see non speaking english, non union drivers. OHHHHH but waite and see, it'll happen Sally, it'll happen. I do give this one credit Rhonda, it's a name responding rather than another anymouse. This district ( in the 60's used outside bus companies such as J Gorsky, which I betch did not have an inside track w/ Valley View such as the guy that wants it!
Master of Reality, Make up your mind and get your facts straight.
VVSD bus drivers are union. As such, there are rules that have to be followed.
"Field trips will be assigned on a seniority rotation basis. Seniority rotation will begin with the top senior driver on the first day of school every school year. Field trips will be assigned first to drivers not in overtime and then to drivers in overtime."
"All work schedules will be packaged and posted, from which the employees will select a work schedule on the basis of seniority, not to exceed forty (40) hours. Driver may elect to be a substitute without suffering a reduction of pay"
You said "drivers that booze it up during the miday soaps, then go get the kiddies" Why on earth would you want the district and union to keep and protect these drivers?
God Bless it! Are you people fools? Perhaps you're all blondes? Do you's actual read what is written? Obviousley not! He's against the district replacing the drivers! HE'S not and never said he's against them being union. He's said......"beware of what the school district will get when & if they use the outside companies".WTF. He never said the district drivers were boozers either! Are you sure your not boozers? I like that "ANYMOUSES" name squeek, squeek! All his comments were regarding outside companies doing the bussing!
