Reality Check: School District's Transportation Fund Operating at a Chronic Deficit

Valley View school district's financial reports are showing deficits in years 2009-11.

It's clear from examining the financials, Valley View school district will need to make some significant cuts in the transportation fund. Otherwise, taxpayers should expect to see more deficits as illustrated in the 2012 budget.

Where those cuts happen is the question.  Outsourcing the bus service to a 3rd party may not result in a reduction in cost.

  1. Do they have a breakout showing how much it costs the taxpayers of the district to provide transportation to the Catholic schools in the district?

    Thanks for the question.

The Number Crunchers discussed your question with Asst. Sup., Gary Grizaffi.

    According to Grizaffi -

"We transport 352 students on 11 Am and 11 PM routes with a gross cost of $254,000. Our net cost after reimbursements, depending on how the State prorates is approx. $137,000. Our net cost would be lower if the State didn’t prorate regular transportation by 42% over last three years."

Hopefully, this helps. If not, please let us know.

  3. Thanks for the info. If I'm understanding it correctly, the district would save $137,000 if we stopped providing this service. It would probably be closer to the full amount of $254,000 since we all know that the state isn't paying the bills.

I think that it's important that we look at all avenues of saving, including this one. $100,000 here and there adds up quite quickly. That's probably the salary of 3 drivers.

  5. I thought the proposal from a private bus co. was going to save them $855,000..not sure if that was per yr or what. Just check on the Patch. It seems to me that outsourcing is a no brainer if it saves money and they can provide the same service. I understood that they would hire most of the current drivers, if qualified. The only loser would be AFSCME because the new bus company has a different union.
